Communicating Effectively

Communicating Effectively

Communication is key.

There’s a trend in society that’s a bit more than disturbing to me. Communication is key.

There’s a trend in society that’s a bit more than disturbing to me. We are living in possibly the most connected digital communicative society ever. Yet, studies show that our communication skills are declining rapidly. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the word Communication as:
1. The imparting or exchanging of information or news
• A letter or message containing information or news.
Or:
A means of connection between people or places, in particular.
• The means of sending or receiving information, such as telephone lines or computers.

Definitions Creates a Baseline for Good Communication

Now that we’ve defined communication and we know based upon several peer reviewed studies (Peer Review is the standard in the scholarly world), that we are the most connected through digital means, the next assumption SHOULD mean that comprehension levels particularly the type that are absent of face to face interaction would be at a higher level. Actually quite the opposite is occurring.

And that brings me to the purpose of both this post and the video that John and I presented via Facebook live. We discussed 5 aspects of communication skills, both in personal and professional situations.

We’ve all either heard of, been privy to, or been “the guy that made that post and got fired”. Issues like that happen with an increasing level of frequency, EVEN AND MOST OFTEN by small business owners. That fact in itself is should be reason to hire a social media marketing management company.

Sesame Street Good for communication
Sesame Street Good. Cat in the Hat bad.

My dear mother always stressed the importance of understanding the appropriate language usage in the appropriate situation. Our summers and weekends were spent at the library. For some reason, she was highly in favor of great Sesame Street Books and anti Cat in the Hat, with his made up languages . Honestly, I’m glad. That Cat in the Hat is an asshole.

As my sister and I began to notice, our papers would receive praise. It’s because our mother made math and language comprehension important. Now, when I send an email or read an email, I can see when and where comprehension began and ended.

It’s difficult enough to understand the nuances of language and communication in person, if you think about it, written communication without a common standard often results in a serious misunderstanding.

Because I am dedicated to growth, I’d asked my friend John to do a video on Facebook Live to discuss. That is ultimately the purpose of both this post and the video. We discussed 5 aspects of communication skills, both in personal and professional situations. I hope you enjoy the video below.
